Location Info
Lungau (Salzburgerland)
The Lungau is a district (Bezirk) in the county Salzburg, one of the 9 federal states of the republic Austria and counts to approximate 20.000 inhabitants. The district-capital is Tamsweg. The northern border of the Lungau consists of the mountain chain the Radstädter and the Schladminger Tauern (Niedere Tauern). On the border with the Pongau you will find the Hohe Tauern. Both these chains formed a natural barrier in the past for a connection of Lungau with the rest of County Salburg. This geographical and social isolation has lead to the fact that Lungau, compared with the other districts, was poor and stayed behind on the social scope. The positive consequence is however that, next to the beautiful mostly unspoilt nature, many of the old culture and habits have been guarded. This has lead to the fact that the Lungau in 2012 was recognized by UNESCO as Biosphere reserve.
